Elsa.jpg Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973). Schiaparelli and Chanel were the two stars of the couture era of the 1930's. The two women, both with strong personalities and opposite styles in design, not only were great innovators, they were arch rivals. Elsa was the known as the 'Entertainer' designer as she was the first to apply the appeal of costume dressing to regular clothes. She was the first to use animal prints and also zippers that were the same color as the fabric. She was known in the 30’s for her trends in art as well as her humor. One of her most popular designs in surrealism was that of hats. One of her most famous resembled a lambchop and was made for her very good friend and most publicized customer, Daisy Fellowes -American Singer sewing machine heiress. She also collaborated with many surrealist artists ,Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, Alberto Giacometti, between 36-39. In 1947 Elsa was also known for using the first shoulder pads, yet her shoulder pads were not just simple pads but hot pink pads, which they called "shocking Pink". Elsa designed several perfumes in addition to clothing. The first and most famous was named Shocking. It was created in 1936. 'Shocking' is famous less for the fragrance itself but for its packaging: besides a box in (as the name suggests) shocking pink, the bottle itself was in the shape of a woman's torso, the voluptuous body of one of Schiaparelli's clients & film star Mae West. Elsa designed handbags for Whiting and Davis in the 30's, famous for their metal handbags. She also dabbled in sunglasses, jewelry, stockings, mens ties, scarves Schiaparelli was one of a kind, her designs the same. A character, yes indeed!
